The Invasion of Ukraine has many questioning the possibility of a third world war and the possibility of a nuclear apocalypse; however for others a different more personal matter is in question. A discord group which formed many years back is suddenly wondering if their pro Russian friend is actually Putin himself. “There’s just no way…. Is there?” says a user known only as Flappy. “I mean he’s always been pro Russian but things have been getting awfully specific the last few days.”

What started as jovial ribbing of the Russian president quickly escalated into geopolitical whataboutism and denial of various anti-Russian claims. “No No! Putin has big PeePee! Is all lies.” Said Moo the user suspected of being Putin. “The US is worse, they are only doing this in response! You can’t trust the mainstream media about the Ukraine, read this instead.” He says while linking Russian state media websites and the one random independent pro Russian website he could find. Sergei, who was in Ukraine in 2014 protesting the government at the time says the information in the articles are laughable. “They’re not even good conspiracy theories, it’s all from the same website written by the same person. Flat earthers at least have a group of people to share the delusion with.”

Others have a different take. The user known as the Squirrel said he’s glad he has the privilege to be able to hate both the US and Russia for their actions. “Not everyone is privileged enough to be able to hate everyone. Most people are forced into experiencing negative actions from one party that taints their opinion. This can often lead them blind to those on their side who are acting badly. “Thankfully this isn’t a problem for me.” says Squirrel “Growing up gay gave me a healthy dose of anti-authoritarianism which has allowed me to hate everyone equally.”

Since Monday the user Moo has started asking the discord for more advice such as. “If you had a nuclear arsenal how would you move it best?” and “How to win war with old tanks.”
